Ben & Jerry's Founding Partner States Parent Company Blocked Palestine-Themed Ice Cream Flavor
The original creators behind the well-known ice cream brand Ben and Jerry's has announced that parent company the multinational conglomerate stopped the introduction for a new pro-Palestinian frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, that established the company with his partner, announced how he plans to independently develop the controversial product as part of an individual series showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's has been prevented from speaking out about.
Longstanding Conflict Involving Founders and Corporate Owner
The recent announcement deepens the ongoing tension between the internationally recognized ice cream maker with its corporate parent, the British consumer goods corporation which has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders maintain that the parent company and its ice cream arm Magnum unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
Watermelon Flavor becoming a Symbol for Support
Mr. Cohen announced through social media how he is creating an innovative watermelon-flavored frozen dessert, requesting consumer ideas regarding naming options plus additional components.
βI'm doing what they were prevented from doing,β Mr. Cohen stated in a cooking set. βI'm making a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians while demanding repairing the damage that was done there.β
This particular fruit has become a symbol for support for Palestinians because of its coloration, that mirror the colors in Palestine's national banner β red, green, black and white.
Historical Activism plus Current Developments
In 2021, the ice cream company ceased sales of their merchandise in areas occupied by Israel, resulting in Unilever transferring the Israeli operation over to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales in the occupied West Bank.
The new product line is being created through Ben's Best, the activist ice cream brand which was first established several years back to support former political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Return".
Management Changes plus Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen revealed how he will develop other ice cream flavors focusing on issues which the company was silenced from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.
This development follows partner Mr. Greenfield resigned his position at Ben & Jerry's in September, after many years of involvement, citing concerns that the company's autonomy was compromised following corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
Previously, Mr. Cohen stated how "Jerry has strong compassion and the ongoing dispute with our parent company was breaking it."
"My heart leads me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for its independence so that it can fulfill the social mission, the principles that it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he told journalists.
