British Designer Antony Price, Renowned for Creating Looks for Bowie and Duran Duran, Has Died Aged 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the groundbreaking British fashion designer who crafted some of the most iconic looks associated with David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has died aged 80.
His reputation was built on his architectural shapes and dramatic aesthetics, including the soft-colored suits that became famous from the iconic band Duran Duran's seminal music video for "the song Rio".
"Remembering him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance online."
This news arrives shortly after he presented his latest collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen showcased a dress inspired by the iconic black velvet "dress" historically worn by the late Princess Diana.
An Enduring Influence
Hailing from Yorkshire, where he was born in 1945, Price moved to London during the sixties to study at the renowned Royal College of Art.
Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at Stirling Copper and was behind the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in the late sixties.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with creations worn by supermodel Jerry Hall, who later wore the wedding dress Price designed for her for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price was the mind behind the distinctive jacket the artist wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His characteristic talent to blend elements of men's and women's fashion along with his masterful technique in crafting body-hugging looks made him a "true original," according to the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing ensembles for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, which included various looks for her American tour after becoming Duchess.
With a vocation that covered over fifty years, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
