Finland Shocks Back-to-Back Reigning Title Holders US in U20 World Championship Quarter-Finals.

Arttu Välilä netted the winner at 2:11 of overtime as the Finnish squad engineered a remarkable 4-3 victory over the two-time defending champion United States on Friday night in the IIHF World Junior Championship last eight.

"Got to give credit to the United States," remarked Finnish captain Aron Kiviharju. "They are a hell of a team, full of exceptional players and a superbly organized team. But I mentioned we were seeking that revenge from the previous final, and I think we kind of earned it tonight."

Lee Tuuva and J. Saarelainen found the net in a 55-second burst in the third period to give their team a 2-1 lead. He leveled the score at 2 with 7:17 to go, then assisted on Saarelainen’s game-leading goal with 6:22 on the clock. J. Saarelainen also assisted on the first goal.

The Boston University defenseman Cole Hutson recorded a goal and a helper for the United States after taking a shot in the back of the head versus Switzerland and missing two games.

"I thought we made good plays for most of the game," the defenseman commented. "But the small details that they got, many of their Grade-A opportunities resulted from our errors."

His university colleague C. Eiserman gave the U.S. a two to one edge on a power play with nine minutes and forty-five seconds remaining in the middle frame. He accepted a pass from his teammate and beat Petteri Rimpinen with a quick shot from the right circle.

C. Hutson scored on a rush thirty-five seconds into the second period. Heikki Ruohonen tied it at four minutes and forty-six seconds on a quick shot from the left side.

In the late game in Minneapolis, the Canadians overwhelmed Slovakia with the aforementioned first-period explosion.

C. Reschny, Tij Iginla, Michael Misa, Sam O’Reilly and B. Martin tallied in the first period, and P. Martone and Cole Beaudoin connected in the following period. Jack Ivankovic turned aside 21 saves.

In the opening playoff game, Anton Frondell netted a pair for Team Sweden against Latvia. The defenseman Leo Sahlin Wallenius contributed a goal and two helpers to aid the Swedish side remain perfect in their five outings.

In Minneapolis T. Galvas, Samuel Drancak, A. Jiricek, Petr Sikora, Jiri Klima and Jakub Fibigr provided the goals for the Czech team.

Relegation Match Outcome

The German team triumphed in the relegation game, defeating Denmark 8-4. M. Schams scored twice to help Germany keep its spot for the following season in the main event. Denmark dropped to the second tier.
