‘He returned from the brink’: Chevy Chase was in eight days in a coma during the health crisis.

The famed comedian suffered a “life-threatening” cardiac event that caused him being placed in an induced coma in 2021, per details from a new film about the entertainment icon.

As documented in I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not, the star of films such as Caddyshack and the National Lampoon series, who hosted the Oscars twice, remained in care for five weeks in the hospital.

“He wasn't right, and he couldn’t explain to me what was wrong. So, we headed to the ER. His heart gave out. During those years he was drinking, he was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy; when the heart muscles get weaker, and they can’t pump as much blood out with each beat.”

Doctors then placed him into a state of unconsciousness for eight days, before advising his child, his daughter: “We might not get him back. We are unsure how present he’ll be. Prepare yourselves for the worst.”

“When he woke up, all he was able to do was use his voice,” she added. “He has essentially come back from the dead.”

The actor personally has stated that he has experienced recall difficulties since his medical ordeal, and in the film he fails to recall some of his past professional and personal controversies, including a physical altercation with Bill Murray in a Saturday Night Live green room.

Chase said he was “upset” by his omission from the 50th anniversary special of SNL this year, at which he was in the crowd but not featured.

“To be frank, it was disappointing,” he said. “I haven't spoken about this until now. But I expected that I would’ve been on the stage too with all the other actors. When co-stars Garrett Morris and Laraine were called up, I was curious as to why I was not. I wasn't invited. Why was I overlooked?”

The 82-year-old, came close to death in 1980 when he was electrocuted on the set of Modern Problems, an incident which precipitated a period of depression.
