The City of Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride to Proceed During FIFA Tournament Despite Formal Protests by Egypt and Iran
Arrangements to hold Pride-focused events and activities throughout the city amid next summer’s World Cup are proceeding as scheduled, despite the Egyptian and Iranian soccer associations raised objections regarding a planned “Pride Match.”
Stadium Policy Alongside City Celebrations
Seattle's planning committee stated clearly they are “moving forward as planned” with Pride activities in the city center. These events will take place around the Group G fixture featuring Iran and Egypt on 26 June. Additionally, the tournament's governing body will permit rainbow flags inside the match venue.
“In our role as hosts, SeattleFWC26’s role is to get the city ready to welcome visitors for the matches and manage the city experience outside of Seattle Stadium,” stated a committee representative.
Legal Background Behind the Formal Complaints
Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, while in Egypt, morality laws are often used to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. Egypt's football association declared it refused to be linked to celebrations that “fundamentally oppose the social, religious and cultural values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” In a parallel move, the head of Iran's soccer body also raised “its opposition against the issue.”
The Governing Body's Position Regarding Flags and Banners
The international federation holds operational control of stadiums during games. While it prohibits banners and flags with political messages, it permits flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” which explicitly includes the rainbow flag. This regulation was in effect at the previous tournament in Qatar and was reinforced following reports of flags being seized.
- This special fixture was an idea created to showcase the city's proud history of advocating for equality.
- A design contest has been commissioned to create images celebrating the occasion.
- Planners are committed to ensuring every visitor feel welcome in the Pacific Northwest throughout the 48-team competition.
The Pacific Northwest hosts one of the nation’s largest Iranian-American communities, a thriving Egyptian expatriate community, and diverse populations representing all nations. “We’re committed is to guaranteeing all residents and visitors encounter the hospitality, dignity, and respect that characterizes our part of the country,” organizers concluded.
