The Reasons Prince Andrew is Giving Up His Royal Titles – and the Implications for the Royal Family
In a statement issued via Buckingham Palace, Prince Andrew has confirmed he is giving up his royal titles, including the Duke of York. Here is an overview of what has been revealed – and what remains unchanged.
What Did the Prince Said?
Having already stepped down as a active member of the monarchy in 2019, Andrew has now chosen to “take additional measures” and consent to refrain from using the “honor or the awards which have been granted to” him.
But he also employed the announcement to emphatically rejecting – as he has always done – the allegations of misconduct leveled at him; albeit having paid out millions to settle the civil sexual assault case brought by Virginia Giuffre – an agreement in which he accepted no fault and strongly rejected any claims of improper conduct.
There has existed ongoing scrutiny on the monarchy regarding the claims against Andrew – especially since his disastrous television appearance with Emily Maitlis in 2019. He now claims he is acting to safeguard his relatives from additional harm resulting from public speculation.
Did the Monarch Stripped Him of His Titles?
No. And although this might be viewed as a mere formality, it holds importance in multiple ways: initially, it enables the prince to openly state to have acted honourably in defence of the monarchy. As stated in his announcement: “I have decided, consistent with my past, to prioritize my obligations to my relatives and the nation first.”
Second, while he has agreed to abstain from using it, the prince keeps his ducal title, as well as the titles the Earl of Inverness and his barony and the esteemed Garter role as Royal Knight Companion of the prestigious order. Similar to the His Royal Highness title, they are effectively inactive.

Why Hasn’t He Been Officially Stripped of All of His Titles?
To revoke a dukedom would take an act of parliament, and would represent an unprecedented step publicly before the public – it has not happened to a high-ranking royal in more than 100 years – that it would likely cause more reputational damage for the royals.
The prince remains a royal by birth. At his birth in 1960, he became such as the son of a monarch. This could only be changed if a letters patent was issued by the reigning monarch.

There have also been reports about his association with a suspected Chinese spy and, this week, excerpts appeared from the posthumous memoir of Giuffre, who died by suicide in April. She claimed Andrew “believed that engaging sexually with her was his entitlement”.
Furthermore, the sovereign is scheduled to make a historic visit to meet Pope Leo soon, during which he will be the initial British king after Henry the Eighth split with Rome in 1534 to pray publicly with the Holy Father and leader of Catholicism. He would not desire that trip to be overshadowed by further adverse coverage about his brother.
What Was the Reaction?
While he said Giuffre had been “justified” by the move, her sibling Sky Roberts informed the Times that Andrew’s honorary prince title ought to be removed for “true justice” to be achieved.
The anti-monarchist campaign group Republic has also said the move is “too little, too late”, adding: “Andrew remains accused of sexual misconduct and misuse of position. He should be divested of every honor and his military position and should undergo a legal probe. Not using silly medieval titles is not a punishment that fits the offences.”
