Woman Knifed in Birmingham City Bus Stop Attack Dies
A woman who was stabbed in the neck in an unprovoked attack near a bus shelter in Birmingham has passed away, authorities verified.
The victim, who was 34, came under attack on Smallbrook Queensway street, just outside the Bullring shopping centre, just prior to 21:00 GMT on Friday, according to police statements.
The suspect, 21, was presented at Birmingham court Monday morning, charged over the attack.
Originally charged with attempted murder however after the woman's death the charge has been updated to include murder.
Police Response
Authorities stated officers would be in the downtown area through Monday to offer reassurance, and investigators were supporting the victim's relatives.
Detectives are appealing any eyewitnesses who may have seen the accused, who is described as British citizen of Black ethnicity, reportedly dressed in an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, trainers and rucksack.
Incident Location
The knife attack occurred near the Bullring shopping centre, opposite the main entrance of New Street railway station.
Law enforcement confirmed they were treating it as a random violent act with investigators stating efforts continue to determine the motive behind.
Witness Accounts
Shalini Doal, who works nearby, described the emergency response after completing her shift around 10 PM Friday night.
She described the scene as "quite chaotic", and said some of her colleagues heard loud disturbances around 9 PM.
"Many my colleagues take public transport, ride the tramline... our security is compromised essentially, here in the city centre."
Another individual, 25, resident of Stoke, said he came to Birmingham quite frequently visiting his partner who lives in the city, expressing concern about what had happened.
"It causes concern about my partner," he said.
"She lacks transportation and works at all of the big music venues... and to think something completely unprovoked occurred, understandably, it's horrible."
